Description
This bridge carries East Side Road over the Swift River just a short distance north of Conway Center. The bridge was built in 1890 by Charles Broughton and his son Frank. The covered portion of the bridge is 224'-9" long, consisting of two spans. The bridge width is 30'-4", the roadway width is 18'-3". The truss is a Paddleford with added Arches. This bridge replaces a bridge built in 1850, and destroyed 1869. (See Additional Information below.)

Photography
A path leads down an embankment from the parking area to the river. The portals are easy to photograph but be careful of the heavy traffic. Bridge can been seen from Route 16 bridge to the east.

Parking
There is a small parking lot on the northeast side of the bridge. A sidewalk is located on the south side of the structure to easily get to the other side.

Additional Information
In 1850s, Jacob Berry and Peter Paddleford built a covered bridge to replace a crudely framed log bridge that had collapsed at this site. The 1850 bridge stood until the Swift River covered bridge crashed into it in 1869. The Saco River covered bridge was rebuilt by Allen and Warren of Conway but it was destroyed again by a tannery fire in 1890.
